Abstract
The value proposition in health care is commonly defined as Value = Quality/Cost. Quality in the US health-care system has relied largely on technology and complex health-care delivery processes with less attention to preventative care and cost, leaving many to question the value delivery. One system that is uniquely positioned to study the value question is Geisinger Health System. It consists of a payer and both primary and tertiary care providers under the same administrative leadership. Using bariatric surgery as a clinical model, Geisinger established an “evidence-based” care pathway with a bundled-reimbursement contingent on adherence. We have demonstrated that this program, ProvenCare® Bariatric, provides increased value by improving the quality of care at a lower cost.
