Expertise

Amanda Caleb conducts research at the intersection of medical and public health humanities, narrative medicine and health communication, with a strong emphasis on ethics, equity and global health. Dr. Caleb’s research primarily examines how narrative, rhetoric and metaphor shape experiences of illness, care, and health policy, particularly in relation to disability, pandemics and historical injustices such as eugenics and the Holocaust. Drawing on qualitative and interdisciplinary methods—including narrative analysis and ethnography—she explores how patients, clinicians, and communities make meaning in contexts of uncertainty and structural vulnerability. Dr. Caleb is especially interested in advancing narrative humility, epistemic justice and more humane, culturally responsive approaches to medical education, clinical practice and public health worldwide.
