Expertise

John Mercuri’s research interests focus on adult reconstruction and total joint arthroplasty, with particular emphasis on hip and knee replacement, complex revision surgery, and the use of enabling technologies such as computer navigation, augmented reality, robotics, and kinematic alignment to improve surgical precision and patient outcomes. He is also interested in perioperative optimization, including protocols that reduce pain, swelling, and opioid use while supporting accelerated recovery after surgery. Beyond clinical outcomes research, his work extends to value-based care, health economics, implant utilization, and the design of orthopaedic care pathways. A parallel area of interest includes orthopaedic bioethics and policy, encompassing professionalism, cost-sharing, implant pricing, and the ethical implications of evolving technologies and system-level decision-making in joint replacement care.
